Arthur & Pat’s
239 Ocean Street Marshfield, MA 02050
Arthur & Pat’ is often mentioned at Chowhound and other places as one of th best breakfasts on the South Shore. We have had breakfast there a couple of times in the past. it is a bit of a drive, 20 minutes or so, from our house…but it is by the ocean so you have the added bonus of viewing some scenic sites before or after your meal. We left home early since we know that Arthur & Pat’s can get crazy-crowded.
Arthur & Pat’s is in the Brant Rock area of Marshfield and looks like some sort of ramshackle beach cottage. There is plenty of street parking and a designated lot beside the building. On Sundays there is always a kid outside selling the Sunday Globe. We got a copy and headed on in. It was before 8 AM so we were able to sit down immediately.

Part of the charm of Arthur & Pat’s is De the cow-owner/manager/waitress’s manner. She’ll shout across the room to greet patrons that she knows (or even those she doesn’t know). I asked her about one of my favorite former specials that I didn’t see on the menu and she helpfully told me that it would be back later this month. (soo wooo hooo!)
The room is very casual, with a dozen or so stools for eating at the counter and about 16 tables in the main room. The walls are plastered with hand-drawn posters for all of the menu items, which include Homemade Banana bread french toast, lobster omelette, filet mignon eggs benedict, and crab cakes with eggs.
Ali ordered the chicken sausage, spinach, grape tomatoes and feta omelette with marble rye toast and I ordered one of the specials: Waffles with strawberries & peaches drizzled with raspberry sauce. The omelette is one of the best omelettes that I’ve ever had. I love the flavor combination of the tomatoes, sausage and the melted feta–divine! I have to find out where they get their chicken sausage. The waffles were lightly crispy on the outside and soft on the inside and topped with a dollop of whipped cream and a dusting of confectioners sugar.

The total for our meal (which also included 2 coffees) with tax and tip was $35. I enjoyed my meal and thought it worth the drive and the price, but Ali says he enjoys breakfast more at the place 5 minutes down the road from us where we can get out the door for around $16. We WILL be going back though, for my french toast… whether he likes it or not… or maybe I can cajole one of my friends into joining me.
